This is an exhaustive itinerary and can be customized as per your choice. Various legs can be clubbed into one to save days. Depending on on your plans and moods, you may choose to leave out some places if you wish to. However, if you have time, it would be a sin to leave out anything.

BIKE RENTALS
– There are many shops which rent out bikes. It is mostly Enfields. They cost approximately Rs 1200-Rs 1700 per day with a security deposit in the range of Rs 15000-Rs25000 depending on the bike.
– Some shops also have the option of sending a guide/mechanic with you. He will ride pillion if you engage that service and will charge approx Rs 1300-Rs 2000 per day.

TIME FOR THE TRIP
– The route typically opens around May end and is open till September end.
– Most people do the trip in July and August.
– Up till August, there are many riders who undertake the trip. In September, the number is lesser.
– During May, June, July and some part of August, you would encounter lot of areas with slush. Even the streams are stronger as the glaciers melt in the summer. BRO does the cleaning up on the roads and repair work after the roads open.
– In September, it is just a little cold but slush is minimal. Also, by September, BRO already would have repaired the roads, so they are in the best possible condition in September, but there are fewer bikers who do the trip in this time.

Permits
As of last year (2014), there was no need of obtaining permits for KhardungLa and Pangong Lake. Rules might change any time, so check again when you reach Leh. In most cases, you won’t be needing any permits If Permits have to be obtained, following is the procedure.
– Obtain inner-line permits at the District Collector (DC) office in Leh
– Inner-line permits are valid for a maximum of three days
– There is a stationary shop just behind the Leh DC office for photocopying etc.
– The office opens at 9:00 am and stays open until 3:00 pm only
– It remains closed during Sundays and National holidays.
– Reach the office as early as possible because it is tough to find people there after 12:00 noon.
– The fee required is Rs. 200 per person and environment tax plus Rs. 20 per person per day as wild life protection fee and Rs. 10 for donating to the Red Cross.
– Keep your passport, and bike documents along with their copies ready with you before going.
– If a permit is required for a place, and you obtain the permit, get the permit photocopied, at least 10 copies, as you will need to submit the photocopies at each check post.

– Brake wire
– Chain lock

– Beyond Kullu, there are no showrooms for modern popular bikes, so spare parts are not available at all, except for Enfield. It is better to carry as many spares. I had a tough time after my bike fell and its handle got bent.
– Last petrol pump before Leh is at Tandi, which is 100 kms from Manali and 365 kms from Leh. Depending on your bike, you would have to carry extra petrol accordingly.
– Only postpaid mobile connections (Airtel and BSNL/MTNL) work after J&K starts. None of the outside state prepaid connections will work. After Darcha till Upshi, no mobile network coverage is available even for post paid.
